"Join"
The objective of this project was to collaborate with my colleagues and construct a furniture structure while creating functional attributes related to modularity. Our collaboration started with learning about solid wood material and construction which includes joinery, structure, accuracy and finishing.
We were tasked with creating a well-crafted form that was indistinguishable from the other modules created by our colleagues. This form would then be only a single unit in the design and would require our creativity to produce a modular design when combined with the other units. This project was done in collaboration with Hattie Carr and Amelia Walker.
Concept
The advancements we made for this furniture structure were made from found materials. In order to reduce waste, we decided to think creatively about the materials that were already available to us while simultaneously using techniques that we were unfamiliar with. We discovered the multiple advancements we could make and began to build our concept from there. Our final models each come with a triangular marble table top and an upholstered seat cushion that are interchangeable in order to provide a customizable experience. The overall modular design gives different options of use when they're together. Users have the options of sitting with friends, which promotes social interaction, and sitting with a friend and a side table for your drinks, to name a few. Individually, the user has an option of a seat or side table which can be switched at any time. Each upholstered fabric seat is unique, allowing the individuality to remain after the advancements were made. Creating this unique experience has broadened my skillset and has given me confidence with these materials and any other materials I may not be familiar with in the future.
Process
Cutting individual parts and combining.
Sanding down the surfaces and building the final form.
Strengthening the structure with finger joints and torching the wood before applying Danish Oil as a finish.
Modular Advancements
We wet sanded the marble and laser cut the chipboard & fabric.
Attaching upholstery and sewing in buttons.
Gluing velcro onto upholstery piece.

How It Works

Seat

The advancements are interchangeable. Use the ties on the upholstered cushion to secure it to the top of the table.

Table

The marble piece is weighty and has enough friction to sit on top of the wood without sliding.

Store the piece not in use on the bottom layer.
